Why Did the Mormon Church Change its Name?

The Mormon church has had three official names. Two of them are mentioned in the current Doctrine and Covenants (a Mormon scripture). These two scriptures (church names) contradict each other. Why did the church take the name of Christ out of its name for four (4) years when the Book of Mormon says it should be named after Christ? Why does the current prophet (Russell M. Nelson, 2019) not want people to refer to the church as Mormon? Why did the church run so many advertisements on TV in the 1970s and 1980s referring to the church as The Mormons, which contradicts the current prophet? Enjoy!

Why is it that Mormons depict Jesus as a blonde haired white man when the bible clearly describes him as a white haired black man? 5:55

The reason the church used the term "Mormon" in the 1980s-2010s was because everyone knew them by that nickname. The protestants had spread the nickname everywhere with all kinds of negative accusations. We wanted to get name recognition out there to associate the church with family values and service. You’ll note that in every add they said "The Mormons," then the name of the church so people would start to realize the real name of the church was not "Mormons". In the last few decades, the church has become a lot more prominent and its name has become more recognized as a positive religion. So the time has come to cast off the negative protestant nickname and let the church’s name stand on its own. The Book of Mormon will not have its name changed. That’s just silly.
It’s the same thing as allowing Blacks to have the priesthood. We had to wait until the world was culturally ready before granting it to them in 1978. Just like when Peter received direction to allow Gentiles to get baptized. Same concept. It was revealed when the time was right. And now is the time to let the name, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints stand alone.

It’s not a name change, we have multiple names, we just stopped using one of them. Just to emphasize that we’re a Christian church, that’s essentially all there is to it

I agree you can’t get rid of the word "Mormon" like you can’t get ride of of the word "Christian" coined by the pagans in Antioch, or conservative created as derogatory slang by the Democrats.
What you can do is educate others on the nickname "Mormons" and the correct name. Which I find that even though your video is biased it still educates on the correct name and history and it is a positive influence to our cause .
Most call us Mormons because they believe that is our name. Some call us Mormons to deceive others that we don’t believe in Christ, and other use the word Mormon because of pride and angst.
We don’t need the world’s approval to be known as Christians or believers in Christ. Our emphasis on the name is show to the world that we are deciples of Christ or the messiah. Christ or Christian stems from the Greek word Cristos meaning messiah.
